Going blind for that curry treat

A BLIND tasting of curry can lead to problems.
Suppose you're not a hot spice man and you get a vindaloo - you only realise your mistake when its too late and the food is in your mouth.
But now one Greater Manchester Asian restaurant has offered one obvious solution to blind or visually impaired customers - print menus in Braille and allow guide dogs in for good measure.
Restaurant manager, Naheem Akhtar decided to introduce the Braille and large print menus at The Pearl in Audenshaw after a conversation with some diners who were blind.
They told him that to enjoy a curry they had to take a sighted family member or a friend with them to read out the menus.
And often the menu problem stopped blind people from enjoying a curry at all.
Said Naheem: "We got in contact with the Tameside Blind Association who took a copy of our menu and helped design them for visually impaired customers.
"So far word is getting around about the menus. Guide dogs are welcome in the restaurant and are allowed to sit next to their owners.
"Other diners are usually happy about it.
"So far nobody has ever expressed any problems.
"Besides, the guide dogs are usually well behaved and great customers!"
Guide dog owner Les Hankinson was so impressed when he ate at the Pearl he nominated it for the Blind Association service excellence award.
"They are so welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed eating there," he said.
