Taxi firm in angry race storm

Kirsty Elleray

STOCKPORT taxi firm Metro Taxis is at the centre of a race storm after imposing a strict ‘European’ dress code on its drivers.

A self-employed taxi driver and members of local religious groups are ‘outraged’ by the firm’s comments made in an in-house newsletter which states: ‘We wish all drivers to adhere to European dress only and no headwear whatsoever’.

Meanwhile Stockport MEP Chris Davies is warning the company they could end up with a court action if the regulations are deemed to be discriminatory.

DIRTY and SMELLY taxis are also BAD for business, in any language.

Taxis companies ought to be commercial businesses providing good, safe services to the paying passengers and NOT religious or cultural organization. When passengers see good clean taxis and the driver is well dressed and also is able to communicate in the local English language, that would make the passenger feel good about the taxis firm and also towards the driver. All these things and positive attitude, make a very good business sense. If Taxis firms and taxis drivers can't see further than their noses then I feel sorry for them. Once again BEST OF LUCK to METRO TAXIS and other firms who think and take positive action to provide good services to the public who use their taxis firms.

Taxi drivers should be allowed to wear what they wants as long as they're modest and neat - that's all that should matter

A good, clean taxis plus a smart "European style dressed", clean shaven male driver, would make both the driver and the passengers very comfortable and also makes GOOD business sense. GOOD LUCK to Metro taxis of Stockport , I wish rest of all the taxis firms would follow Metro's example. This is a modern country with positive attitude and all Taxis Companies should start thinking positive and not live with-in the village mentality.

Well if a firm is saying this "european dress" That is just an excuse, they deep down are racist. Every taxi driver knows they are in UK not Europe, as well as having passing there driving here and aquiring a taxi badge. They dont do this procedure in Third World do they, as long they are wearing clean clothes who gives a dam what they wear? Stupid minority only think like that.

It's good to read that something is being done at last. Taxis drivers should be well dressed at all times, and make customers feel good and comfortable when they are travelling in their taxis. Taxis firms MUST insist that their drivers do dress up well, neat and tidy and remember that they are working in one of the European countries and not third world.
