Pupils learn how to stay safe

PUPILS at a Hyndburn school were given a lesson in health and safety as part of a campaign to prevent accidents on unattended building sites.

Representatives from Bramall Construction visited Hyndburn Park Primary School to take an interactive lesson warning children that they could be risking their lives.

Over the last 10 years, 802 children have been injured in construction-related incidents and 16 have lost their lives as a result of sneaking onto sites unattended.

The pupils discussed the dangers of scaffolding, heavy machinery and passing large vehicles.

Hard hats and high visibility jackets were used to help make the lesson fun for the pupils.

There was also a Stay Safe poster competition highlighting that a building site is not a ready-made adventure playground for bored youngsters.

Bramall Construction training manager Bill Sargeant said: "It is vital that children understand the risks that are exposed to them on a construction site.

"We want to make sure that our work is not the cause of more avoidable injuries so we will be speaking with as many schools as we can to ensure a safe and secure community environment for everyone in Hyndburn."
