School books in to help Tunisian pupils

13/11/2007

YOUNGSTERS in Tunisia will soon be brushing up on their English language skills thanks to Springhill High School.

When the school replaced more than 100 fiction and non-fiction books in its library with new ones, teaching assistant Anis Bakir, who comes from Tunisia, hit upon the idea of sending the old books to the Lycee Fattouma-Bourguiba in Monastir.

Anis initially offered to buy each book for a few pence on behalf of the Tunisian school, but when Springhill heard about what he wanted to do, staff decided instead to donate the books as a gift.

Now Anis and his colleagues are hoping to create a new tradition by sending their old books to the Tunisian school – which is planning to create an English language library – every time they receive new ones. Anis came to Rochdale 15 years ago aged 21. He works as a teaching assistant in the modern languages department. He said: "The idea is to make a strong link between the schools.

"The headteacher in Tunisia was very keen and our school has been very supportive, everyone has done their bit."
