YOUNGSTERS at Ashfield Valley Primary School have turned their backs on traditional car journeys to school and have hit the pavements instead.
Community projects officer Shazia Mahmood and youth and community liaison worker Mushtaq Ahmed from St Vincent’s Housing Association arranged a walk-to-school week at Ashfield to encourage young children to get active.
Mickey Pearson from Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT went to the school to talk to the children during an assembly about the benefits of walking and keeping healthy.
As an incentive for all the children who took part, St Vincent’s purchased 250 sports water bottles with their logo on the front as a treat for the youngsters.
Shazia Mahmood said: "A record of the children who walked to school and who travelled by car was noted by the teachers in the morning during registration.
"Liz Palmer the headteacher was very keen to get the children involved and thought the project was a very good idea."
