Positive taste of uni

26/11/2007

COMMUNITY group Positive Start took students to Manchester University as part of its ongoing project to boost educational achievement.

Alder Grange Community and Technology School teacher – and Positive Start executive member – Shumel Haydartook the year 11 pupils as part of the charity’s Embrace project.

He said: ‘Statistics clearly show that youths from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds, especially from Bangladesh and Pakistan, are vastly underachieving in education.

‘I feel it is not only the responsibility of our schools, but also the community at large to aid in reducing this great gulf in under-achievement.

‘The work Positive Start has done so far has improved the quality of life for many individuals, yet I believe that these are very early days.

‘It is quite evident that Rossendale’s BME population is on a steady increase, so we must establish bodies that can work in collaboration with the schools.’

He added that the successful visit had enabled students to gain an insight into student life and the options open to them after they leave school.

Pupil Hobibur Ali said: ‘I thought university life was just all about work, work, and work. I think I can see myself at a uni in some years’ time now.’
