Oldham College given thumbs up

11/ 2/2008

OLDHAM College has been given top marks after being graded `outstanding' by Ofsted inspectors.

Half of the college's 8,000 learners come from disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Students, mostly 16-18, are trained in hands-on subjects including art, hair and beauty and hospitality. The college also trains 600 apprentices each year.
The report said: "Success rates for learners on full-time courses are very high.

"Cultural differences are recognised and celebrated. Leadership is inspirational and promotes a culture of high aspiration and a strong sense of a learning community."
Principal Kath Thomas said: "This is a brilliant result for our students, staff and for everyone in Oldham.

"We have always been proud of the college and all its achievements, but to receive such an accolade only confirms what many local people already know."
Experts also praised the college's work with local employers on lining up future jobs.
