Students turn on the style

5/ 5/2008

A FUN-FILLED fashion show was held at Levenshulme High School for Girls in Manchester.

The funky-glamorous event was staged by GCSE textiles pupils from Year 11 who have been working on their designs over the past two years.

The 20 students enlisted the help of friends and siblings to strut down the catwalk, to show their creations off to full effect.

A fusion of styles and colours characterised the clothes, and the creations were accessorised by jackets and handbags made by girls from Years 9 and 8.

Family members as well as other pupils at the Crossley Road school were in the audience, cheering and clapping.

The show also saw entertainment by rapper Pisees and R ‘n’ B singer Lois, as well as singing and dancing groups from the school.

The students have been helped with their designs and practical work by Rehima Hussain and Lucy Ingham.

Lucy said: "It was a really good show. The GSCE girls have worked so hard over last two years and have achieved a lot.

"The Year 8 and 9 pupils also did really well, and they all showed a great commitment not just to creating the designs but also to producing the show on the day. We’re all really proud of them."

She added: "Some of them were quite nervous about having their designs on display and some of them were a bit wary of going down the catwalk too, but we managed to push them out with a smile on their faces.

"They’ve worked so hard, and it’s important that their work gets seen. But it’s also a good opportunity for them to share their work with other people too.

"Once they lost some of their nerves, they all felt really proud about what they‘d achieved."

This year’s event was the third time the school’s GCSE textile students have showcased their work in a fashion show, and ticket prices along with donations raised £260 in aid of Oxfam.

Lucy added: "The school donates the money to Oxfam to highlight the issues of child poverty round the world, and it was great to raise so much money."
