Fiza has high hopes

A STUDENT at MANCAT has been recognised as top-class with a new award.

Fiza Shah, who studies at North Manchester Sixth Form College in Harpurhey, has won the Aimhigher 16 to 19 Further Education Learner of the Year Award 2008 for Greater Manchester.

The awards are designed to publicise the benefits of higher education by showcasing the achievements of pupils who aspire to enter into it.

Fiza, a 19-year-old health and social care student from Cheetham Hill, was nominated for the award by her tutor Stuart McKie.

He nominated Fiza for her excellent progression from an uncertain start. She is now set to study a psychology degree at university.

Stuart said: "When I first started teaching Fiza, her attitude to her studies was a concern for me, but four months in she seemed to understand that her actions would affect her future.

"Since then, she has worked really hard to turn things around and is likely to achieve a merit grade which will allow her to study at university in September.

"We are extremely proud of her and I think she is an excellent role model for young people."

The Aimhigher Greater Manchester Awards 2008 will be held on 26 June at Whitworth Hall at The University of Manchester.
