School scores with lottery grant
1/ 1/2002
PROVING gender bending can work both ways in sport lads at a North West primary school believe they will be future world champs at rounders.
To help them on their way their team has just won a £2,000 lottery grant. The lucky sportsmen and women go to Deeplish Primary School, Rochdale, where a rounders team was started as part of after school club activities. The game quickly became popular and kids now practice every week.
So far the rounders team has been learning the basics from the school's P.E teacher Michelle Butterworth but the grant will be spent on hiring a specialist rounders coach.
Said Michelle: "So far we haven't played against other schools mainly because the team need more training but once the specialist sports coach starts our aim will be to play in competitive but friendly matches and also choose a name for the team. We are hoping that money will help us to develop more inter-racial mixing in Rochdale through school sports fixtures."
