Teaching tolerance

1/ 2/2002

LESSONS in racial tolerance and understanding will be a feature of an education experiment in Oldham.

The government has awarded Breeze Hill High and Alexander Park, Alt, Clarksfield, Greenhill, Horton Mill and Roundthorn primary schools £250,000 towards a project aimed at integrating Asian and white school children.

An important theme will be reducing race hatred and mistrust by bringing Asian and white pupils from different schools together in shared drama, photography, poetry and sports sessions. Some of the activities will be out of school hours. Other aims include improving youngsters self esteem by employing older kids to help them learn and raising literacy and maths levels.

The project is a partial response to the recent riot report which criticised Oldham's education bosses for allowing the development of a racially segregated school system in which white and Asian pupils never mixed.
