English boost

1/ 2/2002

ASIAN students in Bury are doing better in both primary and high school thanks to extra language support in the classrooms.

Asian pupils attaining national standards in English at primary level has increased by 19 percent according to a council report. In 1999 only half passed in English at key stage 2 but last year pass levels increased to 71.6 percent. But maths remains a problem area says the report which found that passes in maths at key declined to just over 60 per cent in 2000.

Things are improving later on in Asian students academic life with 52 per cent now passing five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C. The improvement in English is put down to a special language team, which has targeted 16 schools in the borough.
