Cartoon capers win top prize

19/12/2003

A Rochdale student has received an "oscar" for a cartoon animation about the everyday choices which face young people.
Sixteen-year-old Ali Siddique (left) from Matthew Moss High School along with four other young people from Manchester created an animation called 'What Choices?' which deals with the issues of drugs, alcohol and smoking.
The video was entered for the BBC under-18 best animation video and won.
The young film-makers are part of a youth group who train in all aspects of film making at an organisation called WFA which specialises in media work.
Said Ali: "Our group thought about all the different problems teenagers face and how they cope with their problems. After putting our ideas together we decided to do a cartoon about it. Everybody took part in every aspect of the animation which included drawing the characters to editing.
"We meet up every Saturday at WFA in Salford where we work together. It took us eight weeks to complete 'What Choices?.'
"The award has been a great boost to our confidence and we're going to make another video quite soon."
Although film making is Ali's favourite hobby he says he wants to keep it that way and wants to be an architect.
