Top learner Sufia

A BOLTON woman who once thought mental and physical problems would prevent her from ever getting work has been voted the country's top learner.
Sufia Raja, aged 33, (pictured) says she has transformed her life through learning and has now been selected as joint winner of the Learning Works award by the NHSU training organisation which aims open work opportunities for 1.2 million employees in the NHS and social care sector.
With the help of NHSU Sufia overcame several years of ill health and depression and now works as a freelance interpreter for social services in Bolton.
She said: "I was told that because of my health problems I would never be able to work. The course has given me the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply for jobs. Now I'd like to go into the health service as a bi-lingual support work."
Interpreting course manager, Naseem Adam said: "Sufia has persevered against all odds to complete her course. Along the way she's blossomed into a confident, bubbly individual, who supports other members of the group. She believes in herself and her abilities. I feel proud that her determination has been recognised by winning the award."
On top of her interpreting work Sufia has started an Islamic play group and is looking for volunteers and sponsors to develop this work.
