Classes in cohesion
31/10/2006
Asian, black, Chinese, and asylum seeker students will be going
into primary schools with mainly white pupils in a bid to break
down barriers in Trafford.
The 13 to 24-year-olds from Stretford High School will share their
experiences with children at Firs Primary School in Sale
The aim is to help create better understanding of different
customs, cultures and religions at an early age and improve
community cohesion in the borough. If successful the scheme will be
extended to other schools.
The initiative is part of the 'Together with Respect' project which
has been devised by Trafford's Race and Diversity Forum - a
partnership which includes the police, councillors, victim support
staff and members of the housing and the asylum seeker
service.
As part of the project police will undertake Urdu language courses
and receive cultural awareness training.
Stretford High head, Derick Davies, said he was delighted with the
initiative.
He said: "The potential to break down barriers between cultures and
also between young people and the police is very exciting. I think
we all appreciate that by living in such a multi-cultural
community, there has to be an understanding of each other's lives
and values."
Polices race relations officer for Trafford, Michelle Watson added:
"By working with partner agencies and local people, we are
committed to tackling hate crime across the borough.
"Through this project we aim to break down cultural barriers across
all age groups but in particular amongst young people.
"Furthermore, it will help make police officers and staff more
aware of the religious beliefs and customs of Trafford residents to
ensure that we provide the best service possible to
everyone."
The launch of the project took place at Stretford High School and
focused on Ramadan and what it means to the Muslim community.
