For mum and dad

30/ 3/2007

A STOCKPORT student has been honoured with an outstanding achievement award by the Bangladeshi High Commission.

Fifteen-year-old Ishrat Ahmed from Hazel Grove achieved seven A* and two A's GSCE results a full year before most teenagers sit the examinations.

Although British born, Ishrat received the award as her mother Shahrina and father Iftekhar are originally from the Commonwealth country.

Ishrat, a pupil at Manchester High School for Girls, said: "I'm so happy to receive this award because it has made my parents so proud.

"They came to England before I was born in order to get a better start in life and have worked hard to ensure that I can get the best education possible.

"Not only do I feel honoured to get this award but I really feel I'm giving something back to mum and dad who have sacrificed so much for me."

Ishrat received her award, an inscribed commemorative ornament, at a special lunch at the Bangladeshi High Commission in London, where Education Secretary Alan Johnson was guest of honour.

Now in junior sixth form, Ishrat hopes to study medicine when she leaves school.
