Slavery under another name

30/ 4/2007

FORMER Lord Mayor councillor Afzal Khan was caught red handed in a good cause when he visited a north Manchester high school.

He joined students at Abraham Moss High in Cheetham Hill in making handprint banners to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the UK.

The Cheetham councillor chose bright red for his print and explained: "It is important that we recognise the relevance that the past has in helping us change the future into a world where all are free."

The pupils help a fairtrade chocolate sale to raise awareness of the child slave labour that is used to pick the coco beans that are used to make much of the chocolate eaten today.

This raised £150.

Tehreen Saleem, who enthusiastically helped to sell the chocolate said: "I felt it was important to get involved because people should be aware that there are still slaves today, even though it has a different name, slavery still goes on."
