Convict jailed after lying to police

A FORMER convict who covered up for maniac drivers who mowed down and killed a 23-year-old man has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

After Arfan Javed was jailed  for lying to the police, the grieving parents of David Lees pleaded for him  to finally name and shame their son's killers.

Javed's Vauxhall Vectra was used to mow down Mr Lees, a self-employed brick cleaner.

Mr Lees had been out celebrating a birthday when he came out from a bar on Middleton Road, Prestwich, into an altercation with a group of Asian men in October 2006.

Some of the group took the Vectra from Javed, who was not with the group but had been at a petrol station near to the bar.

Detectives tracked him down to Clitheroe Road, Longsight, but he told them he had just sold the car.

Javed, 27,  admitted perverting the course of justice.

Bolton Crown Court  Judge Steven Everett ruled he knew the killers and had chosen to protect them.

It also emerged in court that Javed had a string of  convictions and, at the time of his concocted story, had just been released on licence from a three-year prison sentence for conspiracy to kidnap.

Judge Everett sentenced Javed to two years for perverting the course of justice and a further six months, to run consecutively, for breaching his prison release licence.

After the hearing, David's father, Don Lees, 49, said: "Javed knows who killed him but he won't say."
