Grocer fined for allowing rubbish to build up

27/ 2/2008

SHOPKEEPER Adbul Ghafoor has been fined £3,000 for allowing a huge pile of rubbish to build up behind his store.
Environmental health officers found oil drums, wooden pallets, cardboard boxes and bin bags filled with waste outside Manchester Superstore, in Stockport Road, Longsight, between June and November last year.

On three occasions the waste was piled several feet high.
Mr Ghafoor, of Edge Lane, Stretford, pleaded guilty to six offences at Manchester Magistrates' Court in a prosecution brought by Manchester council. He was fined £3,000, with £900 costs.

Council spokesman Coun Eddy Newman said: "The retailer had previously been warned about the consequences of allowing waste to build up behind the shop - but had chosen to ignore this advice.

"This has a negative impact on residents' quality of life and the council takes a very dim view of it.
"The courts have reinforced our message that this action will not be tolerated."
