Workshops show breaking bread can help communities
29/ 2/2008
UNIVERSAL themes including food, love and marriage are the subject of workshops attempting to break down intercultual barriers.
Zest and Inside Track Regeneration have joined forces to tackle the prejudice many people still have towards others, especially those who are from different faiths and cultures.
The innovative informal workshops - held by the Listening to Others project - focus on a central theme and encourage participants to share an unusual mix of personal stories, modern myths and traditional tales.
On Friday 29 February, Listening to Others invites you to experience an intercultual conversation about food at the Cheetham Hill Primary Care Centre, 244 Cheetham Hill Road.
The "we are what we eat’ workshop will focus on culture, faith and food. It will cover questions such as is food a means to an end, a convenience item you stuff yourself with to keep going, or is it a gift from God to be prepared with care and eaten with respect? Do we live to eat, or eat to live?
Mick Sheldon, a workshop facilitator with the Listening to Others project, said: "By simply listening to each other, using the theme of food, we can explore our differences and similarities to create shared meaning - and it is this that helps us gain a deeper understanding of how we can live and work together more successfully in the village."
The workshop runs from 10am to 2pm and is just one in a series taking place across north and east Manchester.
