Crescent Radio spearheads Milad celebrations

ROCHDALE'S Crescent Community Radio will be spearheading this year’s annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed with a fortnight of special programmes culminating in the annual march through the town.

The station has been covering Milad, the Arabic term used to refer to the birthday of Prophet Mohammed, for the past eight years.

Milad occurs in the third month in the Islamic calendar, known as Rabi' al-awwal and many people celebrate the day by holding street processions and decorating their homes and mosques.

Crescent Community Radio will be broadcasting live link-ups with a number of mosques throughout Rochdale, airing daily events and speeches as they take place across the town.

Special Milad broadcasting will take place from 9 -19 March, with the annual jaloos – march - taking place on 20 March.

The march, will start at Jamia Chishti Mosque on Milkstone Road and the procession will make its way tthrough the town centre to the Bilal Mosque where a special congregation will be held.

The events will be broadcast live throughout the day.

Said Crescent’s station manager, Faheem Chishti: "Milad in Rochdale is unique and makes us the envy of most towns. The feeling around Milad is awesome. We get a buzz about the place and the feeling is quite close to how Muslims feel around the time of Ramadan."

He added: "This is a time of year we all look forward to. The Prophet spoke often about the bringing together of communities, this is the perfect opportunity for us to take a leaf out of his book."
