Community welcomes Oldham Muslim Centre

THE hugely anticipated Oldham Muslim Centre opened its door to the local community at its new base in Compass House.

During its official ceremony, members of the public were able to take a look at the £2.2 million building on Neville Street as well as take part in activities as well as listen to speeches by special guests.

There was also Islamic exhibitions, food and arts and crafts stalls to keep visitors entertained.

The aim of the OMC is to be a central hub of excellence for all communities, to create unity and strength, empower young people, cater for women and provide facilities for the elderly.

Vice chair of the centre, Syed Badrul Alam, said in his inauguration speech: "We came to you with a promise… a promise for something for everyone, for women, children, youth, elders and the wider community. This opening is not the end of the journey but the beginning, we all need to get on board, give our suggests and ideas for how best we can provide an excellent service for all sectors of our community"

Central President of Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE) and chief guest at the opening, Mohammad Habibur Rahman, added: "IFE welcomes and supports projects like this, which engages with the wider community, empowers young people, provides a holistic and comprehensive approach to community issues and works for the betterment of our society. OMC is a model for all to follow"

Other guests included Shaykh Abdul Qayyum, Imam and Khateeb for The East London Mosque, Redwan Ahmed of Channel S, as well as a host of local councillors while over 2000 members of the general public also attended the event.
