Forced marriage victim addresses major conference

19/ 3/2008

AN event to combat domestic abuse among ethnic minority communities has been held by Trafford Housing Trust.

Forced marriages and 'honour' violence were key issues in the spotlight at the Trust's first conference on the issue, which aimed to promote best practice in supporting victims and survivors living in social housing.

National campaigner Jasvinder Sanghera, herself a victim of a forced marriage and honor-based violence, was the key note speaker at the event, which took place on Thursday, March 13 at Manchester United Football Club.

Jasvinder is the author of bestselling biography Shame, a testimony to women who have experienced forced marriages, and a founder member and director Karma Nirvana, an Asian women's project for victims of forced marriages and honour-based crimes.

She addressed more than 200 delegates, including other registered social landlords, local authority housing departments, Women's Aid, domestic violence helplines, police, social services and community groups, giving them advice on how best to help victims.

Other speakers at the event included the Trust's black and minority ethnic homeless champion, Aysha Qasim, housing advice and homelessness co-ordinator Kim Entwistle, and Home Office policy advisor Hannah Buckley, who spoke about the work of its Forced Marriage Unit.

Matthew Gardiner, chief executive at Trafford Housing Trust, said: "Domestic violence and honour based crimes are an outrageous abuse of power.

"The Trust is proud to lead the way to put this subject under the spotlight. Our event stressed that sensitivities and political correctness around these issues must be stripped away, they must be viewed for what they are - serious crimes against the person."
