New alliance to improve relationship with police
20/ 3/2008
PROMINENT leaders amongst Rochdale's Muslim community met with the town's Chief Superintendent and his team to improve relationships with the police.
The evening also gave the community the opportunity to formally congratulate both Chief Supt Peter Mason and Councillor Mohammed Sharif for their part in promoting community cohesion within Rochdale.
The police chief was presented with a certificate from the secretary of Bilal Mosque, Ghalib Hussain following Mr Mason's efforts to build bridges with the town's Muslim community. This included taking part in a football match where Mr Mason played for the victorious Rochdale Police football team against young men who represented various mosques in the borough.
The football match was organised last year to encourage shared activities between the police and the local community and received support from the two local MPs, Paul Rowen and Jim Dobbin. Both parties have agreed to form an 'alliance' and meet on a regular basis at different venues in Rochdale.
Cllr Sharif was presented with the ‘Services to the Community’ certificate, signed by the Mayor of Rochdale. The award was in recognition of his dedicated support to various mosques, youth clubs and voluntary projects.
Said Cllr Sharif: "I received the services to the community award last month in the town hall. Following the meeting, it was an unexpected gesture for these partners, who I value and respect, to present the certificates to myself and Mr Mason. I wish to sincerely thank everyone involved."
He added: "It is vital there is good dialogue between the police and the different leaders in our Muslim community. Rochdale is the beneficiary. We have people who are giving their own time and best endeavours to make this town a beacon for community cohesion. "
Mr Mason said: "I found it to be a very good first meeting - one to be built on. Chairing the gathering with prominent members of our local Muslim community was an enjoyable experience, mainly owing to their positive support."
