Businessman becomes Pakistan MP

A PROMINENT Asian businessman has succeeded in becoming an MP in the recent Pakistani elections.

Clothes shop owner Nadeem Khadem was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly in the recent poll.

Mr Khadem, whose wife, three daughters and a son, still live in Chorlton. Manchester, achieved a majority off 21,700 when he stood for the wing of the Pakistani Muslim League that supports former President Nawaz Sharif.

The Muslim League and the Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Benazir Bhutto until her assassination, were joint winners of the election challenging the rule of General Pervez Musharraf who ousted Sharif in a coupe.

Whalley Range Liberal Democrat councillor John Grant paid tribute to Mr Khadem.

"He was a supporter of the Lib/Dems and helped me in particular when I stood and got elected to the City Council," he said.

"I look forward to meeting him when he has the opportunity to visit Manchester again."

Mr Khdem's cousin, Sheraz Ahmed, said Mr Khadem main aim in returning to Pakistan and politics was to oust General Pervez.

"He was in the uUK for 18 years but returned because wanted to get rid of this dictator and develop democracy in the country," he said.

   Banks in Pakistan would be overflowing with "back handers" cash. Happy days are here again for all the elected MP, they will work very hard at it.
