Man killed himself when prayers failed

16/ 4/2008

A FATHER killed himself after he found that his prayers were unable to rid him of his depression.

Shawarat Hussain, aged 36, was found hanging in his home in Deacon Street, Hamer, on 5 January by his young daughter.

Family members cut the body down, but he was already dead.

Police later found a document in Mr Hussain’s pocket.

However, they later discovered that the note, written in Urdu, had been given to Mr Hussain from the mosque.

It contained specially-written prayers, which Mr Hussain had been told would rid him of his ‘sickness’.

His wife, Dilshinda Khan Parveen, told an inquest how he had suffered from a ‘sickness’ throughout his life believing his ‘personality was damaged’ by mixing with the wrong crowd and experimental drug taking in his late teens.

The couple married in 1990 and she described how he was fine when he didn’t take drugs, but became depressed about a year after they married.

He was prescribed regular injections and tablets to help stabilise his mood.

Mrs Parveen said: "If he failed to take his medication on time he would get angry with himself and try to get out of the house.

"My husband had self-harmed once before two-and-a-half years ago. He took a large quantity of paracetamol, then drank bleach. He later threatened to cut his wrists with a knife.

"I was told after his death that he already tried to hang himself some years ago."

A pathologist’s report confirmed that Mr Hussain had deep marks around his neck from the rope and died through hanging.

In a narrative verdict, the coroner, Simon Nelson, said: "I am satisfied that there were no criminally suspicious circumstances.

"Not only did Mr Hussain die by his own hand, but that he intended the consequences of his actions.

"No family member would have had any reason to be aware of Mr Hussain’s intentions and I think entirely that the document, which was recovered, was one that he would have used in the honourable belief that he may have got better.

"He took his own life while suffering from a depressive illness."

Depression is when someone feels despair and hopelessness. This can be caused partly by regret over the past and present, magnifying previous failures and having no hope in the future. By putting your trust elsewhere you can almost detach yourself from these. If you start believing that there is hope in the future, understanding that past failures aren't the defining moments of your life etc can help dramatically to lift depression. People who are religious are proven to be 'happier' overall.

Ignorance is bliss but can cause many problems.
