Conservationists clean up woodland

CONSERVATIONISTS braved heavy downpours to help clean up an area of woodland.
Members of the Manchester branch of the Islamic Society of Britain weathered torrential rain and hail to work with park staff clearing shrubs, branches, paths and working on habitats to aid conservation in Bruntwood Park, Cheadle, Stockport.
The community action is a voluntary project, with the aim of breaking down barriers between communities and achieving a shared understanding.
Previous activities have included health check days, feeding the homeless, visiting nursing homes and tidying up neighbours' gardens.
Organiser Usman Choudry said: "During our busy lives, we often forget how important the parks and woods are for the community.
"They are our green lungs, and preserving them is crucial to us and future generations.
"We do a different project each month to put something back into the community and it helps to challenge particular stereotypes.
"Sometimes Muslims are seen in particular light and we wanted to show that we are quite normal, and things that are important to the community are also important to us."
The event - Bruntwood Park Clear Up 2- Back to the Woods - took place exactly a year after the group helped out in the park for the first time.
