Man charged with sexual activity with a child

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court charged with sexual activity with a child.

Tanveer Bashir, of Gordon Avenue, Oldham, was charged with three counts of sexual activity with a child.

He appeared at Oldham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and has been remanded to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on 29 April.

On Saturday 19 May last year, a 14-year-old girl went missing from home. When she returned she told officers that she had been with an older man.

Greater Manchester Police works in partnership with Oldham Council and Oldham Primary Care Trust to combat the issue of child exploitation in the borough.

A team, known as Messenger, has been set up to work in partnership with children's charity Barnardo's to identify children who are potentially at risk from abuse and formulate a strategy aimed at helping these individuals.
