Cop demoted for racist remarks

3/ 5/2008

A POLICEMAN has been demoted for making racist and sexist comments while on duty.

The sergeant who worked in the Wigan Division has been made a constable following a Greater Manchester Police disciplinary panel hearing.

Details of what he said have not been released, but the panel ruled he had breached the police code of conduct on politeness and tolerance. He denied making racist comments but admitted using sexist language, during the hearing.

The hearing followed an Independent Police Complaints Commission-managed investigation launched in June after complaints by fellow officers about comments he made during a conversation with them.

Ms Naseem Malik, IPCC commissioner for the north west, said: "The comments made by this officer were of a racist and sexist nature and were totally unacceptable.

"His actions have brought disgrace upon himself and Greater Manchester Police and it is entirely appropriate that he has been removed from a supervisory role.

"The force has done a lot of good work with its communities and the actions of one individual should not be allowed to undermine this work."

Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran, who chaired the disciplinary panel, said: "This officer used wholly inappropriate language which had both racist and sexist overtones. He failed to live up to the high standards we demand of everyone serving in the force.

"He has been given a significant sanction and moved from the area he was previously policing. He now has the opportunity to address his actions and prove to the community and his colleagues that he is worthy to be an officer within Greater Manchester Police."

and racism was being tackled within GMP. Rcism stills exists within the police force and the matter when highglighted is always brushed under the carpet.
