First time voters air their views on politics

TWINS Yasmin and Jasmin Khalik have been airing their views on the BBC’s Politics Show.
The 18-year-olds from Arliss Avenue, Levenshulme, Manchester were quizzed on their views about why local and national elections are important.
The politically-minded pair were picked to take part in the Sunday lunchtime programme because of their interest in current affairs and local issues.
They, along with four other AS Level government and politics’ students, were interviewed when presenter Naomi Cornwell went along to Xaverian College in Rusholme.
As first-time voters in the current local elections, the twins were keen to have their say. Yasmin said: "It was really good to take part in the programme. Where we live, there are a lot of boarded up derelict houses and I think they should be refurbished so that people can live in them. It seems unfair that with house prices having gone up, some people can’t afford nice houses, while these others are left empty."
The student lives with twin Jasmin and parents, Abdul and Afrijun, and has three older sisters and an older brother, Asma, 28, Hasna, 27, Mohammed, 25, and Fateha, 24.
Jasmin also enjoyed taking part in the programme. She said: "I think the councillors in Levenshulme are doing quite a good job, but they could do more to make improvements. I think more should be done to make local transport better and to make the fares lower."
