Appeal to trace witnesses following suspected sexual assault

14/ 5/2008

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a suspected sexual assault over the weekend.

Shortly after 5.20am on Sunday 11 May, police were called to Owens Park, Fallowfield, following reports of a possible sexual assault.

At about 1am, a 20-year-old woman had been on a night out in the city centre when she was refused entry to a nightclub.

She blanked out before waking up in an alleyway, possibly close to a building site, which is believed to be in the Ancoats area. It is possible that she may have been sexually assaulted during this time.

A number of people then helped the woman and may be able to assist the police with piecing together exactly what may have happened to her.

After she woke up the woman was approached by a man and woman who gave her directions to a main road and £4 in cash.

The woman then flagged down a black cab on an unknown road. The female was driven to Owens Park, Fallowfield by an Asian taxi driver, who was wearing a blue beanie hat. The woman gave the taxi driver £4 – the fare was £11.

Detective Constable Ian McNabb of Longsight CID said: "I am desperate to speak to the man and woman who gave the woman directions and money, along with the taxi driver who ensured she got home safely."

"I would like to stress that they are in absolutely no trouble whatsoever but could be the key to piecing together exactly what happened."

Witnesses are asked to call Longsight CID on 0161 856 8284  or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
