Police call for notes about ex-extremist
15/ 5/2008
POLICE have requested that four media outlets hand over notes of interviews with the reformed Islamic extremist Hassan Butt.
The BBC, Sunday Times, Prospect magazine and American TV network CBS have all been approached by Greater Manchester Police. GMP will go to a court today to demand the notes if they refuse.
All four have recently interviewed or carried pieces about Mr Butt, who was arrested under anti-terror laws at Manchester Airport last week.
Mr Butt, 31, has admitted he was once a recruiter for al-Qaeda, but says he has reformed and is now active in seeking ways to stop young Muslims becoming extremists.
He has met officials at the Home Office as part of his recent work.
Mr Butt's home in Manchester and two nearby addresses have been searched by police as part of their new probe.
GMP notified the media outlets last Friday they planned to request interview material under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Mr Butt is still with police, who can hold him until tomorrow. They will then have to charge him, release him or seek an extension in court.
It is understood that the new approach to the media is not connected with a separate case involving writer Shiv Malik. Mr Malik is collaborating with Mr Butt on a book entitled Leaving Al Qaeda: Inside the Mind of a British Jihadist.
A judge at Manchester Crown Court ordered Mr Malik to hand over the material last month, but gave him leave to appeal. That case will be determined next week.
