Family want answers

30/ 5/2008

THE family of a trainee doctor who fell to his death from a university building hope to finally get some answers about what happened next week.

A Leeds coroner will open a two-day inquest into the death of Amir Mahmood, 25, of Haslingden, next Monday.

The student, pictured, was found lying on the pavement in front of the Worsley Building, which houses Leeds School of Medicine, part of Leeds University, on 9 June last year. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead; police said at the time that the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

Amir’s brother Assim, 29, said this week: ‘We are looking for answers about the circumstances leading to Amir’s death.’

The former Helmshore Primary and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School pupil was training to become a GP like his father, who works at Rawtenstall Health Centre.

He had completed his medical course at Leeds the year before his death, but stayed on an extra year to try to improve his grades and better his career prospects.

Amir had moved to Blackpool soon before his death after taking up a job in the A and E department at the town’s Victoria Hospital.

He had met with his university course tutor the day before he was found dead.

Amir later sent a text message to his family, saying he was going to stay with a friend; that was the last they heard of him.

After his death Amir’s parents Khalid and Nasreen Mahmood, of Victoria Drive, Haslingden, described him as a happy person with many friends.

Mr Mahmood said: ‘He was a very nice, very gentle boy who was always happy and smiling.’

Amir’s funeral, at Haslingden Cemetery, was attended by around 100 people; a tribute service was also held at Blackpool Victoria Hospital for his friends and colleagues.
