Stroke victim is an inspiration

30/ 5/2008

A SINGLE mum who fought depression after suffering a stroke hopes to launch a helpline to help others in the same position.

Renu Duggal has already proved an inspiration as the founder of a group that helps lonely people with disabilities to make friends, but says she now wants to expand on her hard work. She announced her plans this week when it was revealed the group had won an award for its efforts.

The 42-year-old was also singled out for the Queen's Awards for Voluntary Service last year.

Renu, of Timperley, formed the Our Independence group seven years ago after battling depression. The illness had been triggered by a stroke which paralysed one side of her body.

Despite also coping with other conditions such as asthma and angina, she made every effort to channel her energy into activities like arts and crafts before a social worker suggested she launch a support group.

Seven years on, the group is thriving, with more than 30 people each week flocking through the doors of the Salvation Army hall to enjoy activities ranging from card making to safari park trips. But Renu has plans to expand this service even further.

"I want to launch this helpline to help other people, something like the Samaritans," said the mother of three.

"Having coped with depression, I know that people are often scared to talk to someone in authority. I would like it if they spoke to me."

She added: "We have very little funding which we use for things like coffee and tea. It would be good if someone can help us. I am also looking for a little funding to start the helpline."

Renu says she is also thrilled to see the organisation scoop the Community Group of the Year title at the Fusion Awards, a ceremony that celebrates unsung heroes from all walks of life.

She said: "I'm so happy - I couldn't believe that we won it. The group is good because it allows disabled people to come together rather than rely on a service that only caters for certain conditions, and which can be accessed only by referral.

"It gives our members the chance to gain their independence and to get treated like ordinary people."

Our Independence meets at the Salvation Army hall, Brunswick Street, Stretford, every Wednesday from 1 to 4pm. For more information or to offer financial support, ring Renu on 0161 980 0699 or 07737 881 613.
