Ahmadis celebrate 100 years of Khilafat
30/ 5/2008
HUNDREDS of Ahmadi Muslims from all over the north-west joined more than 15,000 fellow worshippers to celebrate 100 years of their spiritual leadership known as Khilafat (succession).
The celebrations took place at the Excel Centre in London where head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad's speech was broadcast to over 189 countries via Muslim Television Ahmadiyya.
The centenary of Khilafat is being marked by a number of events in the UK and members from all over the north-west will be participating in both local and national events, including a number of charitable events aimed at raising money for various local and national charities including Save the Children and Humanity First.
Said spokesperson for the event, Farooq Aftab: "The word "Khilafat" has a tarnished image in Britain, frequently associated with images of blood, brutality and a totalitarian Islamic theocracy. The rise of extremist groups which call for the re-establishment of a worldwide Islamic state have helped heighten such fears.
"However, for Ahmadis and many other Muslims, the Khalifa is a spiritual not a worldly office. "Khalifa" means literally successor or guardian. Accordingly, the Khalifa is responsible for continuing the message and mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be Upon Him), educating and reminding Muslims everywhere of their responsibilities to God, towards the rights of others, and the need for developing good morals.
"Under this system of Khilafat Ahmadi Muslims throughout the world are united under the leadership and guidance of the Khalifa who is the head of the Community worldwide. The total unity of the Ahmadiyya Community makes it unique amongst all Muslim groups.
"The current Khalifa is Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad who was elected to lead the Community in April 2003. Although based in London he is accessible to all Ahmadis worldwide and in this respect he marked this Centenary Year with a number of foreign tours."
