Doctor loses court appeal
26/ 6/2008
A DOCTOR who was struck off after working in a chain of unregistered slimming clinics, including one in Salford, has failed in a High Court bid to win the right to practice medicine again.
Dr Nashwa Sherif, from Dudley, was found guilty of a ‘catalogue of extremely poor medical practice coupled with dishonesty’, while working in slimming clinics operated by Dr Mostafa Mahdy Abu-Romia, from Eccles, around Salford, Stoke-on-Trent and St Helens in 2003 to 2004.
Dr Abu-Romia had been struck off while running the clinics, and Dr Sherif was also struck off in February last year, for the part she played in running the clinics and for writing a ‘dishonest’ reference letter to the GMC relating to her boss’s hearing before them.
Gemma White, for the GMC, told the court: "A GMC fitness to practice panel determined that Dr Sherif’s fitness to practice was impaired by reason of her misconduct.
"The acts of misconduct were committed during her involvement in a number of slimming clinics operated by Dr Abu-Romia.
"Those acts were characterised by the Panel as a ‘catalogue of extremely poor medical practice, coupled with dishonesty’.
