Muslim students to discuss extemism at Salford Uni

27/ 6/2008

Issues including extremism on campus will be discussed over the next three days as over 500 Islamic students gather at the University of Salford for the national conference of FOSIS - the Federation of Student Islamic Societies.

As well as hearing speakers from across the world, the delegates, who represent university Islamic societies across the country will also hear a recorded address by Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell and a speech by the President of the National Union of Students, Wes Streeting.

Bill Rammell will be speaking to the students about the issues faced by Muslims in higher education, including extremism on campus and the challenge of getting more Islamic young people to go to university.

Faisal Hanjra from FOSIS said: "We’re delighted to have input from Bill Rammell who came to our conference last year. There are many areas of Government policy - particularly in education - which our members are interested in, so we’re keen to establish a closer relationship with the Minister and hear what he has to say."

Debates also feature prominent speakers from countries including Iraq, the USA and Kuwait, as well as UK-based experts on issues including community cohesion and theology.

Usman Ali of Salford’s Students’ Union is head of the University’s Islamic Society.

He said: "Having the FOSIS conference here at Salford is a major coup for us. We have a large number of Muslim students here at the University and to have FOSIS on campus is a real boost for them."

The FOSIS annual conference runs from 26-29 June at the University of Salford.

Hey Shamas, no, they do not have to learn and write arabic. you must be a arab for saying this. BTW, the Quran is also in english. Which is better to follow.

If students want to discuss extremism and stop terrorism they all should first learn to read and write the Arabic language and then read and understand Quarn in the language it has been "so called" written. Once that has been done they will all have a better understanding of Islam rather than follow the "blind" Imams who pretend to know it all about Islam. Further more students ought to do what they are supposed to do at the Uni. and that is study and get qualifications to be a better person and citizen of this Great Country.
