Shopkeepers bid to reduce alcohol abuse

4/ 7/2008

A SHOPKEEPER is leading a community drive against alcohol abuse.

Mahesh Panchal, owner of the Fresh and Frozen off-licence, in Newton Heath, has been elected chairman of the A5 Off Licence Forum, which aims to promote good practice in alcohol sales and tackle booze-related anti-social behaviour and health issues.

The forum co-ordinates action between shopkeepers, residents, police, health officials and councillors in the Clayton, Ancoats, Miles Platting, Newton Heath and Collyhurst areas of east Manchester. More than half of the area's 44 off-licences are already involved and the forum is hoping to increase membership further.

Mr Panchal said: "Corner shops are the heart of the community and by working together with the council and the police we can ensure that the community stays safe and healthy."
