BME workers have catching up to do
17/ 7/2008
BLACK and Asian workers may have to work 30 years for their job prospects to catch up with those of white colleagues, MPs warned today.
The Commons Public Accounts Committee says that ethnic minorities in this country have a much worse employment rate than the general population - a gap of 14 per cent which has hardly improved in 20 years.
The committee blame discrimination against black and Asian jobseekers although they admit that poor education and ability to speak English are also factors.
Five major cities, including Manchester, house two-thirds of ethnic minority families in this country.
The chairman of the committee, Tory MP Edward Leigh, challenged the Department for Work and Pensions to promote jobs for people from the ethnic minority communities.
"If things go on as they are it could take more than 30 years to eliminate the gap with white workers," said Mr Leigh.
He points out that the Government's attempt to narrow the gap, spending £40million a year, has so far met with little success because of a stop-start approach, with short-term projects started and then abandoned.
The gap between the jobs available to black and Asian workers costs the nation £1.3billion in benefits and lost tax revenue and £7.3billion to the British economy in lost output.
Today's report says that Jobcentre Plus personal advisors play a crucial role in finding jobs for ethnic minority workers but they are under considerable pressure which limits the time they can spend with their customers.

DOES NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP PEOPLE FIND EMPLOYMENT!
And people from ethnic minorities do face discrimination when they looking for work. WHAT YOU ECPECT? IT IS NOT ANYTHING NEW! The english people always cry out "the ethnics do not work, they live off the state" Well..what can they do if no one offers them work? It is not like ethic people do not want to work.
