Jail sentence for Blackburn serial speedster

24/ 7/2008

THE roads of Blackburn will be a safer following the conviction of a driver who consistently flouted speed limits and jeopardised the safety of others.

Haroon Hussain, aged 23 of Whalley Range, Blackburn pleaded guilty to and was convicted on seven out of nine charges of perverting the course of justice at Preston Crown Court and now faces 28 days imprisonment and a six-month driving ban.

All charges related to speeding offences caught on cameras in Blackburn between May 2006 and July 2007.

Hussain, who drives a BMW with distinctive number plate, BIG 4943 registered to his mother Robena Idrees of the same address, committed all the offences after 6pm and averaged 40 mph in 30 mph zones- reaching a speed of 46mph on the A666 Whalley Road.

In his attempt to evade prosecution for the speeding offences, which in total would have added up to £540 fine, 27 penalty points and an inevitable ban on driving, Hussain consistently blamed other fictional people to whom he alleged he had sold the car.

The evidence against Hussain mounted as in each case DVLA confirmed that they had not been informed of any transfer of ownership.

Hussain had also been physically stopped in the BMW by the police on nine separate occasions for other reasons and a front facing camera image of him driving forensically matched his details held by DVLA.

Investigating officer, PC Mark Pilkington said: "This case shows the lengths that people are prepared to go to in order to avoid getting penalty points on their driving licences and Lancashire Constabulary will continue to robustly investigate offences of this nature.

"The public should be aware that what may start as a simple speeding offence can escalate to much more serious charges of Perverting the Course of Justice dealt with at the Crown Court and resulting in a criminal conviction."

Said Linda Sanderson from Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety: "Less than three per cent of drivers in Lancashire have 4-6 points on their licence, yet this man has been a menace on the roads of Blackburn acting as if above the law.

"He has had no thought to the consequences of speeding to himself or others. I implore any parents of young drivers to step in and help stop reckless behaviour. Mr Hussain will attend our Wasted Lives Young Driver Education Programme whilst in prison to change his cavalier attitude."

He has got away very lightly , he should have banned until he is 25 years old and then made to retake the driving test again on his 25th. Birthday, and NEVER to drive a vehicle larger than 1200cc engine car. Young people sometimes can't handle big powerfull cars?.
