Takeaway owner in court
4/ 8/2008
A FORMER takeaway owner from Accrington has pleaded guilty to 11 food hygiene offences including allegations that there were rats and no hot running water on the premises.
Zafar Iqbal, 43, ran the Spicy Kitchen on Market Street, Heywood, during October and November 2005 before it was closed down following a public complaint.
He appeared at Rochdale Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to all allegations made against him under the Food Safety Act 1990.
The court heard that a member of the public complained about refuse and food waste accumulating in the back yard of the premises in November 2005, at which time Iqbal was out of the country.
Jackie Hall, a specialist food safety officer, then carried out an inspection of the takeaway and it was shut down after she found evidence of rat droppings and urine and insufficient washing facilities for both staff and customers.
Iqbal, of College Street, Accrington, no longer has involvement with takeaways.
He will be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on 26 August.
