Parents stark warning after tragic loss of daughter

6/ 8/2008

THE parents of a 'beautiful' two-year-old girl who died after her dress caught fire have warned of the peril of leaving children unsupervised.

Safa Mansoor, of Glodwick, Oldham, suffered fatal burns as she played in front a living-room fire while her mum was washing upstairs.

She was taken to hospital and had a number of operations, but died weeks later.

It is thought the toddler, wearing a pink party dress and clutching a Spiderman toy, moved an unattached fireguard as her mum was in the bathroom. Her clothes caught fire and - in front of her horrified three-year-old brother - she became engulfed in flames.

Her brother's screams alerted mother Safina Mumtaz, 30, who rushed downstairs and frantically put the flames out - burning her own hands in the process.

The toddler was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital after the blaze on March 13, and later transferred to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool. But she died on April 10 after a number of operations.

Tragic

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Oldham coroner Simon Nelson said: "This was a terribly sad, tragic, untimely and unnecessary death."

He added: "By publicising this case, if one life was saved then the lesson of this tragic episode would be learned."

The toddler's home had undergone a fire safety risk assessment weeks earlier.

Smoke alarms had been fitted and the fireguard that was moved was noted at the time to be sufficient.

A fire service spokesman said that as a result of the blaze, assessments had been changed so that fireguards now have to be fixed and not moveable by children.

Holding back tears after the inquest at Oldham Magistrates' Court, Mrs Mumtaz and husband Mansoor Sadiq, 31 - who have two other children - said their love for their daughter was `beyond expression'.

Mr Sadiq, a food production operative, said: "Every moment an image of her is in our eyes and we can't ever forget her.

"Our message to other parents is that safety is of the utmost importance - don't leave your children alone."

Safa, was so cute and she was my niece i miss her so much. I remember everything about her anf her two older brothers. I wish there was something i could do to help, i feel like it was all my fault this happened in the first place. I miss Safa so much and the times she use to hide and we use to take ages finding her and then we would find her shoes and quickly take the sheets of the bed and she loved to smile. I don't have a single bad thing to say about her she was perfect always smiling and laughing lending a helping hand. Aksa
