POLICE staff and officers at Lancashire police are expected to attend a diversity event to improve understanding of Muslim and Gypsy Roma Traveller communities.
The Defining Diversity day will take place at Lancashire Constabulary's headquarters in Hutton today and is part of a series of events aimed at exploring different communities and the wider issues affecting them.
The event, which will also be attended by police authority members, will allow both police officers and staff to learn more about the different aspects and sensitivities of each community as well as dispel some myths.
Residents from each community will also be attending.
Inspector Sue Bushell, from the force's Community Cohesion and Diversity Unit, said: "This is the latest in a number of awareness building events to arm staff and officers with more knowledge and insight into the diverse communities present in Lancashire. Previously we have looked at the issues affecting the Polish community and disabled residents and further events are planned in the future.
"As well as dispelling many of the myths surrounding the Gypsy Roma Traveller and Muslim communities, this event will provide officers will the opportunity of asking questions that they may feel uncomfortable asking in any other situation.
"It is hoped this useful knowledge will increase their confidence in dealing with these communities and enhance communication with the police to provide an improved service."
Last month Lancashire police celebrated Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month. This included a visit by the force's mounted branch at a travellers' site near Accrington to enhance community relations and increase trust within the police.

This is something to reflect upon as we always seem to blame the 'minority' for living in segregated areas. Muslims especially are moving out into different areas in good numbers and honouring neighbourly relations regardless of belief and colour.
Does it work the other way around? How does that position Britain today when we are all told that we live in a pluralistic society yet people have contempt for anything 'different'?
