Meacher makes it two in ten

1/ 7/2002

STAFF at an Oldham community project was holding a double celebration as they celebrated their 10th anniversary and the opening of their new base.

The Werneth and Freehold Community Development Project has been running for a decade at its old building on Lynn Street but thanks to Selhal Housing and funding from the Europ it now has a new home at Tamworth Street. Environment Secretary Michael Meacher officially opened the building as he did at Lynn Street 10 years ago.

Said project co-ordinator Howard Sutcliffe: "Our work is supported by local mosques, church and community schools. It has demonstrated that Christian and Muslims, Asians and whites are able to work together for the common good. The staff team is culturally diverse.

"We have responded to the needs for young people male and female. We run a playgroup, and summer play scheme. We also work with local women and informal educational classes are provided for both men and women."
