SUNSHINE and an extravagant jubilee carnival parade set the Rochdale mela off to a good start.
Banners included that of the organising charity for the Mela, Multi Asian Arts and schools, community centres, such as, Bangladesh Youth Society Rochdale, Warburtons and other local buisnesses and artist groups. Those in the parade, also, performed on stage keeping a crowd of upto 300 entertained.
Big time performances were from the newly launched Bhangra band '5RB' getting the girls screaming with their Smash Hit single 'Akiya.' There were Artists from Pakistan, including well known Actress and singer Asma Lata who starred in films 'Toowfan' 2001 and 'Mumta Ka Karz.' She gave the audience an inspiration for love with her songs of compassion.
Mohammed Sarwar Manager of Multi Asian Arts and lead singer of the Asian music group 'Shola' performed well known hits and the group played backing up tracks to the sola stars. This was extra effective when they played music to the comedy of comedian Azhar Rangeela. It appeared rather like a desi style pakistani stage show!
What would a Mela be without traditional Punjabi Folk music who else to perform it but the 'Desi Bhangra Boyz' with their traditional Sikh gear they were a charming sight. Who else to sing them but the one and only Ijaz Lohar. He did a marvelouse piece followed by Bhangra band 'DCS' performing their latest hit 'Mitranu Chargai dharu'. They really got the crowd jumping.
The stage performances, Asian cuisine food stalls, Islamic Art and clothes stalls and music stalls kept the people present grasped in the festival. The diversity of cultures on stage and in the crowds showed the Rochdale community is truly a Multi-cultural one.
