Sun saves Manchester's Asian festival

1/ 8/2002

MANCHESTER'S mela was - excuse the footballing cleche - a game of two halves.

Day one - Saturday - saw modest numbers of people at the Platt Fields site next to Manchester's 'curry mile'. Rain marred the evening show.

But things really took off on day two - Sunday - when there was a break in July's winter weather spell. Tens of thousands turned out to enjoy the sunshine, the entertainment, the food and the fun of the fair.

Meanwhile things went on indoors at Oldham's Culture Clash show which featured new boy band 'Untouchablz' and the Asian girl dance group 'Face to Face'. The girls, dressed deep red saris with Egyptian-style veils, danced to the Bollywood number Bhoomro.
