New charity to help stranded Pakistanis

1/10/2002

A ROCHDALE man has launched a campaign to repatriate Pakistani Muslims stranded in Bangladeshi refugee camps.

Peace studies expert Ghulam Sarwar Nawaz says his immediate aim is to raise £20,000 which would be used to buy tickets to transport Biharis across the Indian sub-continent by plane.

The 250,000-strong Bihari community consists of Urdu speakers who opted to settle in what became Bangladesh. During that country's war with Pakistan they became a target of ethnic hatred. They were stripped of their possessions and herded into camps where they live a miserable existence to this day. Many want to be transported to Pakistan.

Said Ghulam: "We have set-up the Stranded Pakistanis Welfare and Rehabilitation Fund. Air tickets cost £150 each so £20,000 can buy quite a few. We hope our example will stimulate other charities into raising money for these forgotten people. The suffering of the Biharis is a huge but largely unknown tragedy."
