New dawn for REC

1/10/2002

ROCHDALE'S Racial Equality Council has been given a new face. But the changes run much deeper than appearances.

The REC was previously criticised by the ethnic community for no doing enough - and by the wider community for doing too much for minority groups. It re-launched itself with an open day as a "centre of diversity" to promote common understanding in Rochdale's multi cultural society.

Rochdale was largely unscathed by the recent racial tension that exploded in neighbouring towns of Oldham and Burnley and the equality councils chief executive Mohammed Naeem wants to continue promoting harmony.

The centre works in liaison with Grater Manchester Police, the Council for Voluntary Services and Rochdale Federation of Tenants and Residents association.

The REC which became a limited company this year aims to provide training, promote racial equality, help people with asylum applications and provide health and immigration advice."

Deputy mayor of Rochdale councillor Sultan Ali welcoming guests at the open day said: "Today's event provides an opportunity for public services and for people to get to know all aspects of the REC. The REC is there to look at inter-racial issues not just racial."
