Their history in pictures

1/11/2002

YOUNG Asians on the rave - one of the photographs illustrating the South Asian communities of Manchester which will be on show next month at the People's History Museum.

Critically acclaimed photographer Tim Smith captured these teens at the Manchester mela, other pictures portray scenes from everyday life of Asians in the City. They will form part of a new exhibition called 'Moving Stories'.

The theme is the history of the South Asian communities from their arrival in Manchester to the present day. A collection of oral histories will complement the photographs. These have been recorded and edited by outreach workers Irna Qureshi and Sham Rehman and will be heard in a booth created by artist Gowri Savoor.

Part of the project will be a 'living history' character called Nahid played by actress Monica Patel. She will tell the story of a 12-year-old girl's journey from Pakistan to England, where she joins her father, through to her adulthood.

The exhibition will open on 2 November.
