A head full of words

"MY head is just full of words and verses and I jot them down on a notepad to get them all together."

Fahmida Hussain's formula for creating poetry certainly seems to work. The 21-year-old from Rochdale has just won a prestigious literary award from a society with five million members.

Law student Fahmida has been given a merit award and medal from the International Society of Poets after having seven of her anthologies published by the American organisation.

She said: "I was shocked to be short listed for such a big award then I was ecstatic when I heard I had won it. It's great to be recognised by the society."

Fahmida says she gets a lot of support in her writing from her brother Pav who is an enthusiastic fan. She has now written over 500 poems and has been published by Blackstone Books, Calypso and Voice of the Future.

She was educated at St Edward's Primary school and Balderstone High and is now studying at Liverpool's John Moores University.

Fahmida added: "I hope I can inspire up-and-coming writers to keep this beautiful language alive."
